Kindergarten & 1st Grade
Kindergartners and 1st graders are learning the foundations of music: beat and rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo, and musical style. They will also begin honing their vocal and instrumental technique and engage in basic improvisation and composition.
2nd graders will focus on beginning music literacy skills, musical vocabulary, and creating their own music through improvisation and composition.
3rd graders will focus on developing good choral techniques and will continue developing music literacy skills through playing recorder. They will also learn about the physics of sound production and basic digital music technology.
As 4th graders skills and knowledge of music history and music theory are deepened and reinforced, they will develop music citizenship skills of collaboration, opinion sharing, and decision making. These students will play an important role in the planning of the spring concert.
5th graders will focus on the skills they will need in middle school and high school music, including increasing familiarity with music terminology, reading standard music notation, choral techniques, and recorder technique. In the winter, they will participate in their final elementary concert. In the spring semester, they will participate in a collaborative concert with the junior high choirs.
