Concert Questions
What should my child wear for the concert?
Students should wear nice, clean clothes that show that they're taking pride in their performance, but that are comfortable. Dress clothes or nice school outfits (think picture day clothes) would be appropriate. Many girls wear dresses and many boys wear button-down shirts with ties, but more casual attire is fine. Avoid shirts with large writing, as it can be distracting and avoid shoes that are difficult to walk in.
What can I do to help make the performance the best possible experience for the students?
Good concert etiquette shows respect for the performers who have worked very hard and are very proud to present their music. It also shows respect for other audience members. Here are some tips for audience behavior:
Is it okay for my family to leave the concert after my child performs?
It is polite to stay for the entire concert to support all of the students. It can be disheartening for any performer to see their audience leave before or during their part in a concert. Each of the three groups in each concert will be singing only three pieces, so it won't be too long!
How should my child behave while performing?
Students should behave in a way that shows respect to the audience that has come to see their performance. Here are some ideas we talk about in music class:
How can I help my child deal with stage fright?
Stage fright is a normal feeling for performers at all levels. Feeling nervous shows that you care about your performance! Here are some pieces of advice that I give to students before concerts:
How can I help my child prepare for the concert?
The links above will take you to lyrics and recordings of songs that the students will be singing for the concert. Feel free to use these to practice songs at home. Students will also be bringing home lyrics sheets to use for practice.
Can I get a recording of the concert?
Due to copyright laws, the school is not allowed to distribute recordings of our concert.

Good concert etiquette shows respect for the performers who have worked very hard and are very proud to present their music. It also shows respect for other audience members. Here are some tips for audience behavior:
- Arrive before the concert begins to find a seat.
- Once the performance begins, all talking and other noises should stop. This is polite to everyone who is trying to hear the music and helps to minimize distractions for the performers who are working hard to remember their songs and give their best performance.
- Clap at the end of each song. If there is a speaker, it is polite to clap after they finish speaking as well.
- Respect all of the performers by staying for the entire concert. There is nothing more discouraging for a performer than coming on to a stage and seeing an empty audience. If you must leave early, it is best to do so in between groups (grades). If you cannot wait for the end of a group's set, please wait until there is a break between songs.
- Keep small children with you to ensure that they don't run away or make sounds that could be distracting to the performers. If a child becomes restless or cries during the performance, you can take them to the lobby area where you can still watch the performance.
- Remember that the student performers see you! Look interested and respectful during all parts of the performance. Please do not use phones or have earbuds/headphones on during the concert.

- Dress appropriately. See above for more details on how to dress for our school concerts.
- Do not talk to other performers or to audience members. At an elementary concert, I tell students that it is okay to wave to their families once before they begin singing their first song.
- Walk and stand carefully on the risers. Always make sure you are in the center of your step. When getting on and off the risers, make sure to step up and down. Never jump!
- Stand quietly in one place with hands and feet to yourself.
- Watch the conductor.
- If a mistake is made, keep going! If nobody draws attention to mistakes, the audience might not even notice.
- Have fun, or at least look like you're having fun! Smile at the audience to show them that you're happy they're there.
- Make sure all of your behavior is respectful to other performers and to the audience.

Stage fright is a normal feeling for performers at all levels. Feeling nervous shows that you care about your performance! Here are some pieces of advice that I give to students before concerts:
- Choose a focus point during the performance so you don't look at the audience. A great place to look is at me! I'll be directing with my hands and mouth the words.
- Remember that you're singing in a large group. If you forget the words, you can listen to the people around you to get back on.
- Listen to the other singers, instruments, and piano accompaniment. If you're focusing on the music, you're less likely to be distracted by anxiety.
- Act calm! Even if you feel nervous, just pretending that you aren't can help you feel more relaxed.
- If you're feeling very nervous, pause and take a few deep breaths. You'll usually feel better right away!
- Remember that everyone in the audience is there because they support all of the students and want them to do their best. Nobody is there to judge the performance. They're just happy to be there!
- You've put in the work to prepare for the concert. Now, just do what you know how to do and have fun with the music!
