Wait for the Wagon
By R. B. Buckley
From On the Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder
VERSE 1
Will you come with me, my Phyllis dear, To yon blue mountain free, Where the blossoms smell the sweetest, Come rove along with me. It's ev'ry Sunday morning, When I am by your side, We'll jump into the wagon, And all take a ride. CHORUS Wait for the wagon, wait for the wagon, Wait for the wagon and we'll all take a ride. Wait for the wagon, wait for the wagon, Wait for the wagon and we'll all take a ride. VERSE 2 Where the river runs like silver, And the birds they sing so sweet, I have a cabin, Phyllis, And something good to eat. Come listen to my story, It will relieve my heart, So jump into the wagon, And off we will start. CHORUS |

Students worked with songwriter Kyle Gray Young to compose their own first grade song. Each class wrote one verse of rhyming lyrics and students came up with a melody to go with those lyrics. Kyle then put each class's piece of the song together and added accompaniment to make it the song that you'll hear. This grade's creation has some especially fun and silly lyrics!

The Okee Dokee Brothers are very popular children's bluegrass band. They won a Grammy Award in 2013 for their album Can You Canoe? which included this song, "Rosita." To make this "adventure album," they canoed down the Mississippi River, learning about different kinds of music, and exploring nature, and writing new songs as they traveled. Although the members of the Okee Dokee Brothers, Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing, are originally from Colorado, they have made Minneapolis their home. Joe (the guitar player) even attended nearby St. John's University for college! Check out their website to find more of their great music and videos.
Another Minnesotan and alumnus of St. John's University, Charlie McCarron, arranged this piece with piano accompaniment. Charlie is a Minneapolis-based composer and former producer of the popular music composition podcast Composer Quest. He writes a wide variety of music, including electronic, instrumental, video game, commercial, and film music. Learn more about his projects on his website!
