2nd Grade Spring Concert Information
A Kid Who Went Everywhere
By Holdingford 2nd Graders
Arranged by Kyle Gray Young
VERSE 1 (by Ms. Przybilla/Ms. Loso's Class)
I like to climb. With my lime. I was almost eaten by a fox. When I was hiding in my box. CHORUS (by Ms. Bernstetter/Ms. Loso's Class) I went to summer camp. And they gave me a stamp. To send a letter home. Because I just broke my phone. Ooooh... Aaaah... Aaaah... La lala la. VERSE 2 (by Ms. Patrick/Ms. Loso's Class) I found a bear. That lost all its hair. And now it's sitting on a chair. I can see it over there. CHORUS |
|
Students worked with songwriter Kyle Gray Young to compose their own second grade song. Each class wrote one verse of rhyming lyrics and students came up with a melody to go with those lyrics. Kyle then put each class's piece of the song together and added accompaniment to make it the song that you'll hear. The second graders' song turned out to be a very nice and lyrical piece with some delightfully silly words.
The Wind
Music by Mary Beth Huttlin
Text by Robert Louis Stevenson
VERSE 1
I saw you toss the kites on high And blow the birds about the sky; And all around I heard you pass, Like ladies skirts across the grass. CHORUS O wind, o wind, O wind a-blowing all day long, O wind, o wind, O wind that sings so loud a song! VERSE 2 I saw the different things you did, But always you yourself you hid. I felt you push, I heard you call, I could not see yourself at all. CHORUS VERSE 3 O you that are so strong and cold, O blower are you young or old? Are you a beast of field and tree, Or just a stronger child than me? CHORUS |
Mary Beth Huttlin wrote this song based on the text of a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson. Mary Beth is one of our Composer House composers this year and wrote this song just for the Holdingford students. The swirling, rising and falling melody seems to mimic a restless wind while the lyrics describe how we can feel and hear the wind, but we can't see it.
Mary Beth is a native of North Dakota, but moved to Minnesota to attend graduate school at the University of Minnesota. She has been teaching, performing, and composing in the Twin Cities ever since.

Bird Song
By Gaelynn Lea
GROUP 1
Bird, why do you sing?
Fate has clipped your wings.
Bird, why do you sing?
Fate has clipped your wings.
You make me feel like a bird in the sky
Fly ‘round and ‘round and I can’t fall down
You make me feel, make me feel so free
Like I just came awake, not afraid to be
You make me feel like a bird in the sky
Fly ‘round and ‘round and I can’t fall down
You make me feel, make me feel so free
Like I just came awake, not afraid to be

Gaelynn Lea of Duluth, Minnesota has been a favorite artist of students since they were introduced to her music in class last school year. Due to her physical disability, she plays violin in a unique way, but she does so with amazing musicality and creativity. She was experienced as a fiddler before becoming a songwriter. Her original compositions combine elements of fiddling with very modern techniques, including using a looping pedal to create many layers of sound. She was chosen as the winner of NPR Music's Tiny Desk Contest in 2016. In addition to touring and playing shows around the country, Gaelynn is also a public speaker and advocate for disability rights and positive social change.
