It was a busy and exciting first week of school! All classes focused on music class expectations and procedures, reacquainting ourselves with each other, and reviewing some music concepts. 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th Grade The older grades reviewed the Quaver Five and reacquainted themselves with each other. We did a music student scavenger hunt in which students had to find students in the class who fit a variety of music-related criteria, such as "takes music lessons," "likes singing more than playing instruments," and "has made an instrument." The kids did a great job of chatting with lots of classmates to find people who are involved in music in a wide variety of ways. I enjoyed learning about how the students engage with music outside of class! As part of our classroom management system, we will be using composer houses again this school year. Students in second through fifth grade are divided into four houses, or teams. Each multi-grade team works together to earn points, or beats, for on-task behavior. This year, our four composers who the houses are named for are living composers instead of composers from history. Each of them has graciously volunteered to partner with our classes this year to teach the students about writing music and what it's like to be a composer/songwriter. We are so very fortunate to have these partnerships, and I expect great things will be happening in music classes this year because of them! You can read more about how composer houses work and who our composers are on the Composer Houses page. To kick off the composer houses, most of the students were sorted into their houses this week. The remaining classes will be sorted next week. It's fun to see the students are already so excited to learn about these composers/songwriters! Kindergarten & 1st Grade Kindergarteners and 1st graders have been learning about the Quaver Five and getting to know each other. We discussed how our rules will look in the music room. The students had great ideas about the many ways they can behave respectfully and help everyone do their best in music. In both grades, students played a singing game to help us all learn each others' names. Students practiced the Circle Fun song, which makes a game out of moving from spots on the carpet squares to a circle in the back of the room. We also worked on the September Rap, which we will add instruments to next week. The monthly rap is how we begin each class period and works as a warm-up to get students speaking, moving, and playing with a steady beat.
