The start of a new school year is always an exciting time! While students are experiencing so many new things as they begin a new grade, music class is more like a reunion! It's been fun to reconnect with students who have been in music class in previous years, and it's been great to meet the kindergartners and other new-to-our-school students!
We're starting the year off with reminders of expectations and protocols and setting up new routines, but we've also been doing some fun songs and games to get into the swing of music class! Music Class Rules All grades have the same rules in the music room, which conveniently spell out the word MUSIC! M – Make good choices. U – Use nice manners. S – Sing, speak, and play only when asked. I – Involve yourself in class activities. C – Care for instruments, materials, and other people. Warm-Ups Grades 3-5 are learning a new set of music warm-ups. Eventually, student leaders will be running these warm-ups to start classes! Music Houses Grades 2-5 learned about the three mentors who they will be learning about and from this year. The music houses are teams that work together to earn points through positive behaviors. Each house has a "house leader" who is a real-life musician who will be teaching us about their music making and music careers this school year. This week, all of the students found out which of the house teams they'll be a part of this year and we began learning about each of the musician house leaders: trombonist Brooklyn Audette, music professor and community music organizer David McCarthy, and percussionist and composer Zack Baltich. You can read more about the music houses and house leaders here.
