The house system is a special part of music classes for grades 2 to 5. It combines classroom management, learning, teamwork, and fun throughout the school year. Based on the English school house system (like the houses in Harry Potter), in our music classes, students are "sorted" into one of four houses, or teams, at the start of the school year. These houses, each with members from all three of the grades, work together throughout the year to earn points for their house totals in hopes of winning the quarter.
The Houses Each house is named for a musician who will be studied throughout the year. In the past, we've had historical house leaders, but in recent years we've been incredibly fortunate to have current musicians volunteer to fill this role in a more active way. These musicians work directly with students, virtually and/or in person, to teach them about the many different ways that people perform music today. 2020-2021 International Music Houses This year's house leaders will be teaching students about music in different places around the world. Houses will be led by a composer in England, a violinist and teacher in Bermuda, a singer and actor in Canada, and a bassoonist/pianist and teacher in Taiwan. How It Works
