"This is such a good question! I absolutely get nervous on stage! Sometimes its excitement, we call that adrenaline, that creates a nervous energy and other times I have a bad kind of nervousness from worrying about doing a good job. To calm down, I remind myself that I like making music MORE than I am afraid of someone noticing I made a mistake or not liking the music I play. Not to mention that making a mistake is OK, even professionals make mistakes! I also remind myself that the audience does not want for me to play poorly, and they want me to do well! Once I have started playing music, I feel more relaxed because I am back in the mindset where I enjoy what I am doing and I don't have time to think the things that make me feel nervous." -Brooklynne Audette "Yes. Always. I've gotten better at living with it. I agree with Ms. Audette that focusing on making the music rather than on being seen making the music helps. I have been thinking a lot lately about how music demands a kind of humility that I often lack, but that I aspire to. I think to some extent I got into music because I wanted to show off, but music has taught me not to show off. The paradox is that, the less I try to show off, the more impressed I am with the music I make." -David McCarthy

"Yes! Most orchestra or band concerts have a dress-code, meaning we are given guidelines for what to wear so the musicians all look similar and professional. The most common thing musicians hear is "concert black". This usually means all black clothes, and it implies no sneakers, sweatpants/leggings or jeans or other casual clothes. If I play with a jazz band I get to pick what to wear which is usually a dress I feel pretty in. When I play chamber music with my quartet, we pick our dress code and prefer to pick a color we will try to include, or just do something casual and we end up not matching and that is ok!" -Brooklynne Audette "Drums! Also guitar." -Zack Baltich "I wanted to play the trumpet. My mother said no." -David McCarthy "Looking back, I always loved trombone, I just didn't know that it was that instrument I was hearing and enjoying until I started playing it and realized how to detect it in the music I had heard." -Brooklynne Audette Do you have pets? If yes, what are their names and how old are they? Do you have any kids or pets?11/3/2023 "I don't, but I am a regular pet sitter. I pet sit for a dog named Chaos, and sometimes for another dog named Dexter. I also watch a lot of cats: Cat Jeoffry, Lady Day, Moema, Grisou, Elena, and Oreo." "No, but I am very close to my nephews and niece, and I pet sit a lot." -David McCarthy "No pets - although I drive an old delivery van (very good for hauling percussion gear), which I affectionately refer to as DiGiorno, which I think of as a pet." "No kids! see above questions about the pets." -Zack Baltich "I have 2 shiba inu dogs, Kupo (coo-poe) and Rikku (Ree-coo), a brown tabby cat named artemis, and a western fence lizard we rescued when we found him in some blackberries we got at the grocery store. His name is Shane." "I do not have kids, but I have 2 dogs, a cat and a lizard." -Brooklynne Audette |
