"Bass trombone is my favorite instrument because I am able to express a full range of emotions on the instrument. It can be beautful like singing, delicate and soft, or full and rich, it can be powerful and majestic - it can be funny or playful, it can be obnoxious and it can even be angry. This is fun for me to listen to, and also fun to perform and channel those emotions to share through music." -Brooklynne Audette "Trombone. I love the sound most of all. I also love that it has a rich history. One of my favorite pieces of Baroque music is a motet by the German composer Heinrich Schütz called "Fili mi, Absalon," which features several trombones." -David McCarthy

"Not yet, but I feel like am I am getting to know them, since I get to read their answers to your questions!" -Brooklynn Audette "I am getting to know them this year through chats online and on their social media, they seem really cool! I'm glad to get to know them!" -Zack Baltich "Not really, but they seem very cool. Although if the other houses keep beating mine, I might start to develop a grudge."
-David McCarthy "A lot! I have a phase in 2017 where I was recording in cave-like spaces all over MN, so I did a lot of exploring that year."
-Zack Baltich "When I was 12 i worked and saved all summer to buy my first drumset. I loved that thing."
-Zack Baltich "I have a background in saxophone, and although I don't play it much these days, I might get back to it. I also play bass guitar, clarinet, drum kit, flute, guitar, and some harmonica. I'd like to learn to play the trombone. I am currently in possession of a trumpet, and I might use that to pick up some brass skills." -David McCarthy "I also play guitar, and synthesizers, and other electronic instruments!" -Zack Baltich "I played bass in a punk band for about 5 years, I only play bass at home now, I don't play bass anywhere professionally anymore. I also know how to play Euphonium, but I don't own one - which is like a small tuba! It plays the same range as trombone, but uses valves instead of a slide" -Brooklynn Audette "Hmmm, when I was 12 the fantastic move School of Rock came out. That was around the time when I realized how much I like music, and this movie (starring 11 year olds playing in a rock band), really cinched it for me. I worked all summer, and bought a drumset that fall." -Zack Baltich "My insruments were all basically forced upon me either by my mother or by necessity. The only instruments I ever said I wanted to play were drums and trumpet. I can sort of get by on drums if necessary, but I'm helpless on the trumpet." -David McCarthy "I've mentioned that my mom made me join band, she also picked my first instrument for me, which was flute! Our school had a night where we all went to try out instruments before joining band in 6th grade. I tried trumpet, flute, and clarinet, but flute was the one I sounded best on my first try. I picked trombone later in 10th grade because my band didn't have any trombone players and I was bored with flute. Flute is still cool! It just wasn't for me. Trombone was also what I was interested in trying because I noticed in the music I was listening to, I didn't like the flute parts as much as I liked the brass and trombone parts. This is actually THE song that made me want to learn trombone."

Because of this, I have realized that I am very sensitive, empathic, and if I worked outside of music I would probably want to help people deal with emotions. I bet I would have gone into psychology." -Zack Baltich "Maybe run a hedge fund." -David McCarthy "I'd like to do some type of visual art, I almost went to college for art instead of music, and wanted to work as a 2D animator." -Brooklynne Audette "In 6th grade, my mom told me I was going to take band class. At that age, I wasn't choosing it for myself, but doing what I was told to do. I learned quickly that being in band and making music was fun! I made a lot of friends, and we were all working together for a similar goal of playing music together. After my first band concert, I made the decision to choose music and to keep getting better so I could keep playing songs with my friends and continue to see how good I could get at making music." -Brooklynne Audette "All the wrong reasons. I think I was drawn to it initially because I was blown away by the rock music my father played on the stereo in the car and in our living room. I have distinct memories of listening to early sixties "girl groups" like the Ronettes and the Shirelles on oldies radio and just having my world turned upside down. I remember my mother tried to play me a recording of some Renaissance music when I was very little, and I was appalled, yet somewhat intrigued. I wasn't experienced enough to interpret what I was feeling, but I definitely understood the power of music to move me. I remember deciding that I really liked country music, and being kind of proud of that, because it wasn't something my parents listened to, but then being told by my friends that country wasn't good. I didn't care, because I knew it was good, and that experience helped to make me into the contrarian I am today. I still don't listen to a lot of the music most of my friends listen to, and I still love country. I recently learned to perform "Coat of Many Colors" by Dolly Parton. Fortunately, many of my friends have learned to love Dolly Parton. But I beat them to it." -David McCarthy "I like Jolene." -Brooklynn Audette "I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE songs by Dolly Parton. I shared my arrangement of "Coat of Many Colors." I think my favorite song of hers might be "Jolene." I also really like "9 to 5," and want to get a group together to perform it. There are too many to name. Dolly Parton is one of the truly great American songwriters." -David McCarthy |
