"Organ shoes are similar to dance shoes. They have a really thin sole but a one-inch heel. They help me feel the pedals while I'm playing to make sure I hit the right notes. And sometimes it even feels like I'm dancing on the pedals!" -Br. Jacob Berns

"The organ has been played for centuries and centuries. Ones similar to what we know today got their start around the 700s, but an early version called a "hydraulis" was made in the 3rd century B.C. Fun fact: the hydraulis was powered by water, and some versions required hammers to play. They sounded kind of like a steam boat." -Br. Jacob Berns "I compose music because it lets me create something new, and share what I created with other people. And I really like working with the musicians who perform my music!" -Mikey Maiorana "For me, music is part of prayer. It also connects with us at a very deep emotional level, letting us express something more than we can say with just words. No matter what we do in life, music will make that better." -Br. Jacob Berns "Music creates connections and builds bridges in a world that desperately needs connection." -Shanti Simon "Much of my life, I have been a music performer and student. At present, most of my music is done for church, whether it is accompanying our worship or some (very) small compositions. In addition, I get to sing every day as my community gathers for prayer. I have helped prepare scores for hymnals and electronically notate some old handwritten music so we can read it easier. Did you know that listening to music with foreign lyrics is also a fun way to help learn a new language?" -Br. Jacob Berns "I compose music for ensembles like choirs, string quartets, and orchestras." -Mikey Maiorana "I am a conductor with the United States Air Force and the University of Oklahoma" -Shanti Simon |
About the Question BoardThe Question Board is a whiteboard in the music classroom and/or an online form on which students can write any music-related questions they have. They can be questions that are unrelated to what we're doing in class, questions that I student prefers to ask anonymously, or questions for our house leaders. Follow this page to see the intriguing and wide variety of questions that students are asking! Archives
