"Great question! Saluting is called a "custom & courtesy" in the U.S. military. All military members salute the U.S. flag. Members of lower rank salute members of higher rank when in uniform outdoors and then the higher-ranking member returns the salute. This can get very confusing when you are walking with a group of people of various ranks. On flightlines and indoors, people do not salute except for special occasions. People who are not in the military usually do not salute people in uniform or the flag, but there is nothing wrong with showing respect in that way." -Shanti Simon
